Archibald Racing looks to have a smart stayer emerging, with Black Run securing his second consecutive victory in impressive style. Perfectly handled by Ryan Houston, the progressive gelding tracked the leader into the home turn before accelerating best when clear at the 250m.
Black Run continues to show the qualities of an exciting staying prospect, possessing just enough early speed to take up ideal positions before relaxing into his work — a profile that promises plenty as the distances increase.
Speaking after the race, the stable said:
“I was hoping to lead and then we were going to sit outside the leader. I was a little bit worried when Ryan crossed to the fence and we ended up box-seating.
He’s shown a bit more versatility today. He’s had to squeeze through them and in the end it was a lovely ride from Ryan. We’ve had a bit of luck with him.
It’s great for the owners, with most of the ownership group based in Melbourne, so it’s very satisfying to bring him down and win in front of them.”
Looking ahead, the team is confident there is more to come:
“We’ll just go through the grades from here. There’s still some wiggle room in the benchmark system and he’s still quite progressive. That was his first time out to a mile and a half, so it’s pleasing to see him handle it so well.”
With two strong wins on the trot and clear improvement still to come, Black Run is shaping as a stayer to watch in the weeks ahead.
