Dual stakes-winning mare Lilac delivered a fantastic result for her ownership group on Tuesday, selling to Japan’s Katsumi Yoshida for $1.5 million at the 2026 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale on the Gold Coast.
Purchased out of Karaka Book 1 in 2023 for NZ$300,000 in conjunction with Champion Thoroughbreds from Curraghmore, the daughter of Justify quickly proved herself a quality racemare for Annabel and Rob Archibald Racing.
A talented and consistent performer throughout her career, LILAC won two stakes races at three, highlighted by victory in the Group 3 ATC James H.B. Carr Stakes at Randwick.
She also competed consistently at black-type level throughout her 13-start career, earning more than $385,000 in prizemoney for her connections before adding an outstanding result in the sale ring.
Offered through the Yarraman Park Stud draft as a broodmare prospect, Lilac attracted strong international interest before eventually being secured by leading Japanese breeder Katsumi Yoshida for $1.5 million.
“This sire (Justify) hasn’t had much success in Japan yet but we think he is a very good broodmare sire,” Hashimoto said of Lilac.
“She had a nice frame. She was gorgeous the way she walked – very nice. We pretty much liked her.”
“It was tough. It is never easy. The bidding was a little bit over our budget but we are happy that we got her.
“Most likely she will go back to Japan and to go to Equinox.”
Lilac becomes the latest high-class Australian racemare set to continue her career in Japan, where elite Australian bloodlines continue to be highly sought after by some of the world’s leading breeders.
The result marked a fantastic return for her ownership group, with the mare earning over $385,000 on the track before producing a multimillion-dollar sale ring result.
Congratulations to all involved in her journey and thank you to Yarraman Park Stud for presenting her so beautifully at the sale.
